I have the Keepgo.com Lifetime Europe SIM Card which works perfectly in The Netherlands but doesn’t while roaming to another country.
Insert the sim card, wait a minute to detect and connect to the local provider (either KPN, T-Mobile or Vodafone… can’t tell which one). As there is no configuration for APN or any settings to use the sim card , it either just works or not. In NL, it works.
I travelled to Antwerp, Belgium and it doesn’t connect to any of the local providers here (Base, Orange, Proximus, Telenet) eventhough they are on the Keepgo.com operator coverage list. The R1 just says/stays disconnected.
I’ve checked the sim card in another device (where I can set APN and such) and it works immediately so it’s not the sim card.
The KeepGo sim card is not ‘local’ to The Netherlands but utilises the big local operators in each country that is covered (47 countries, 131 operators).
Anyone else running into operator roaming issues? How is the R1 automatically working out the correct APN settings for each operator?
"If you use Keepgo SIM with your device the first thing to check is the APN (Access Point Name) settings. Depending on the model of your device, APN settings may be at Mobile data/Cellular data settings. Check if it’s as below:
If the APN is fine, check if Data Roaming and Mobile Data are enabled. Depending on the model of the device, Data Roaming option may be at Mobile/Cellular data settings.
If you have a dual SIM phone make sure that you have set the APN and enabled Data Roaming for exactly the slot where the Keepgo SIM is. Try changing the slots or remove the second SIM if the problem with connection persists even though the APN settings are correct."
But they did not wanted to give me more support as I’m not a customer of their services: “Kindly provide us with your line ICCID.”
Did you try with a SIM from a national/regional telecom operator? I travel since friday (4 countries in total so far) with a multi device SIM from my national operator without any issues.
Thx for your response. APN may be a cause of the issue, I’m not sure but it’s the only thing I can think of setting-wise.
I’m using multiple sim cards from Keepgo in a couple other devices (mobile hotspot, Mikrotik router) and they’ve worked fine across the border in Belgium, Germany, France. For these devices I could enter the APN settings. These are the same plans/coverage as the one in the R1 now.
On the R1 we can’t change/configure the APN. I assume it autodetects or does something else to be able to magically connect using the keepgo sim card in the R1 as it does work fine in The Netherlands.
I have not tried it with a national telecom operator sim. Vodafone did have data simcards that could be added to my regular subscription however now it’s much more expensive and has a lower data limit when abroad. The Keepgo sim would be a better option for me (… when it works …).
I also have not tried turning the R1 completely off and then on when abroad. I assume it should roam just fine when it detects different operators.
@huggi what SIM provider do you use? is roaming seamless across borders/operators or do you need to switch off/on?
I have the same issue in Malta. I am using a local provider, and a smartphone connects automatically with the data network but the r1 doesn’t. roaming is on too
Just had a chat with Keepgo support. They can’t help as I can’t manually configure the correct APN settings required for Keepgo (which is internet.keepgo.com) however he did share what they see on the backend.
The APN they see incoming from the R1 is: internet.focusmobIIe.com (also not sure if those are capital ‘i’ or normal ‘L’
Short update: I’m currently in Berlin and the R1 says/stays disconnected over cellular. It worked while travelling on the ICE train starting in The Netherlands. As soon as we crossed the border and the R1 had to switch towers to a local German operator the connection dropped.
Both cellular and roaming are enabled. The local German operators my other device (iPhone) sees here are all supported on the KeepGo SIM. I have turned the R1 completely off and on this time as well. No dice. So far Belgium and Germany do not seem to work while The Netherlands does work albeit using an incorrect APN according to KeepGo.
Would be awesome if we could have the option to manually configure the APN settings on the R1 at some point in the future.
