Nice design! But I feel like the phone part of this device isn’t coming to light for now.

Thank you, thank you! I don’t think we’ll actually see any phone capabilities outside of maybe messaging via SMS. It’s reasonable to think of the r1 as more of a keychain for LAMs than a mobile communicator.

I’m hoping it’ll be RCS instead of SMS.

RCS would be nice, but to take full advantage of it, an app is required. Perhaps MMS could be used, or RCS without taking advantage of all the features. We already have a SIM card that isn’t used to make calls or send messages, so perhaps RCS support without many of the features included is reasonable.
