I bought it because $200 for teenage engineering AI gear is crazy and its orange.
I wanted something that could help cut down on being stuck on my phone, but still be able have some similar AI functions.
I had no delusions it would magically be better than a phone, but for me, that wasnāt really the point. A fun, quirky device that doesnāt break the bank, that could help with things with a single button, I was all for giving it a shot.
Totally knew there would be early adopter issues, so fine with that.
I feel a bit like the people who expected Jarvis in your pocket have tainted my excitement a bit, but i reminded myself that the aim was to give me a portable LLM assistant with its own screen and camera for nothing more than requests. I want my phone time, I want my camera time, and i want my ADHD brain to have access to an LLM that doesnt involve the many distractions my phone brings.
I just wanted to be a disconnected, connected, present in the moment, geek. Surely thats not too much to ask?
Iām just passionate about tech, and after seeing the presentation and all the things the r1 will be able to do, I just wanted one. The price tag was great, Teenage Engineering was behind the design (and I own a Playdate, designed by them too), it was super orange, and I was starting to mess with AI assistants, so it resonated with me from all sides.
I was excited to see it was Teenage Engineering gear. Excited to be able to note and ask questions on the go. As well as do some of my Midjourney queres by voice. The Teach Mode looks super BA so that tooā¦
Soon as I saw it the next morning and Jesse presented it, like bet deal for $199!
I am bored to gekkk with the āApple Knows Bestā attitude.
Even tho I buy refurbs, delete/reset their crap & run my own work arounds is a boring huge waste of my time. I already went thru this with windows in the 90ās. I prefer to spend time with my first lovs; Poser, Daz, photoshop & Mid Journey; than mess with apple crap. Nuff said.
So far āJessicaā (is her name) & I are making wonderful progress, plus she is getting to know my little parrot, Kali. It will take time for all of us, but is happening & hey, ya think my iPhone will ever get to know my Kali???
Same here. Iāve also seen some future potential. I am currently waiting for it to become useful, and in the meantime, itās sitting next to my modular gear. It is a VERY nice object, if nothing else
Sounded like a good product, looked cool, I love orange. I always buy new things. Price point was affordable AND---- no subscription costs. I think the no subscription costs (for the R1) to me is a quiet game changer. Too many devices and tools have costs tied to them. I would bet the average consumer has over $100 in subscription costs , probably over $150 if they have streaming services.
Also, considered this as the first of many steps for many companies that will bring us to helpful companion devices and digital friends. R1 today, R2D2 tomorrow
The orange made me do itā¦
Jesse sold it in the keynote. And to be honest not only one. Right now waiting for the Big Bang and all the promised features
I love the idea to have my own workflows to make some part of my live easier.
Basically this for me also. I assumed it would go nowhere, but for the price itās a fun shelf filler if nothing else. Iām batch 2 and yet to receive it still, so I have doubts itāll even make it as far as the shelf at this point!
This tbh
It was cute and 200$ and I am a sucker for cute devices. I liked the concept and hope that it will get to a point where all those things we imagine are possible.
Seemed like a fun device to work on and try to build unique projects on. I also ask a lot of questions, and having a standalone device keeps me from getting sucked into an endless scroll and losing time on the phone.
I was actually designing a device that was very similar and was just at the point where I could start ordering parts when the reviews from launch came out and I realized it could do everything I was looking for with better specs so everything else on top of being a handheld LLM button that isnāt my phone or worn on my body is a bonus.
Just wanted a little walkie-talkie, pokedex, virtual pet. Just hoping they add more virtual pet features.
I bought it because I wanted to get cutting edge tech to surprize my husband with a gift. Iāve gotten him a 3D printer in the past which was more expensive. I like that this wasnāt too much money if he didnāt end up liking it or not use it much.
It turns out he doesnāt use it much because:
- Doordash doesnāt work in our location
- We use Google Music not Spotify or Apple Music
- I thought he could integrate it with other apps and customize how it works. Like even though you donāt support Google Music, he could set up a task that would allow him to play a playlist, for example. But that isnāt a thingā¦
I do feel like I was tricked, as a ton of the features I was expecting are not available in my region (Ontario, Canada). We considered returning it, but we decided to keep it in case new features were released to improve it (kind of like how Cyber Punk got better with time). The hardware looks cool, and the Rabit character is cute, too, so itās kind of a novelty / collectorās item if it doesnāt end up getting better.
for me it was the no subscription feesā¦ That is the bane of my life.
I knew what I was getting for one up front fee.
I thought it would work. Perhaps allow access to the LAM to let me train specific functions. I guess I was a rube.
Exactly this.
Also this, but after learning about teach mode I smashed that purchase button!
I just love exploring and building my own fun scenarios. I do that with home automation and I am keen to experience it with Rabbit!
