Hi @simon - I’ve tested Swisscom in Switzerland. Works well :slightly_smiling_face: - can you please add it to the List?

This also includes the common MVNOs like Wingo, Coop Mobile, M-Budget Mobile and and Lycamobile.

I am using the Rabbit R1 in China to test Chinese SIM cards. The supported cards are: China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, and China Broadcasting Network. All of the above can be used normally.

Metro by T-Mobile requires you to register the device. So after you physically put the SIM card in, you can either call them and they’ll help you over the phone or you can do it on the website https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com
I think over the phone they’re going to charge you a $20 activation fee and website it is free. (They can usually skip charging the fee if you tried doing it on the website first and we’re having some technical error

I thought it was a Tello but then my 3 month trial ended. I found a Boost card when asking at Walmart for Clearance for $6. I also used a Mint Trial Card and month card.

This is great. I was considering the $195 plan for 360 days and now I think I’m gonna grab it. It has 12gb.

I just received my US Mobile sim cards (one for each of their 3 networks). I tried their “Light Plan” ($10/month for 2GB) on their Dark Star and Light Speed networks - neither worked in the r1. Is there something else I need to configure or change to make either activated SIM work in the r1?

Just a small note on the APN comment, you cant change or look at your APN stuff with the r1, they keep that on rabbits end. So if you have a carrier that needs you to change something, you’re outta luck.

I would also caution just because a carrier worked before, that it still would, I think some of that is outdated. Tello is a great example (or anything with tmobile, really) of something that used to work but now doesn’t for most.

Personally, I would avoid anything trying to use tmobile anything. Verizon services can work, but you might be running into it not thinking it works with it. I think most folks using a service with verizon signed up the sim with another device and just moved it over.

Good to know. Thanks.

What about Telnyx? All I want is a SIM for about $10/month for 1GB… Is there anything confirmed to work now for about that? Verizon and AT&T don’t seem to offer anything in that price range, so that leaves just the MVNO’s.

The following SIMs worked some time in the past in the US, but after what MrPickles said, I don’t know what value this still has…

  • Google Fi (data SIM!)
  • Metro by T-Mobile
  • Mint Mobile
  • Red Pocket
  • Tello
  • Telnyx
  • T-Mobile
  • Ultra Mobile
  • US Mobile
  • Verizon (data only, tablet SIM)
  • Verizon Wireless

Thanks. I wish there were a way to know why some are compatible and others aren’t, so that determination could be made before ordering a SIM and starting service only to discover that that provider no longer works. In some respects, having an open SIM slot and no officially-sanctioned provider is more annoying than the reverse.

@gadgett has a fair point here that hasn’t been answered in earlier posts (as far as I am aware).
What do we need to look for with a SIM, so we know which SIMs will work?

Aryan (one of our awesome device engineers) is working on publishing a list of bands supported by the radio. I think that’s gets us closer… but you’re right… it’s still not ideal.

I’m hoping to find some time in the future to get smarter on the actual technical details of the problem and then take advantage of some relationships we have to accelerate fixing them… it just hasn’t happened yet :frowning:

Thanks for the update. I’m actually surprised by the fact that the root cause is still not clear.
This issue with SIM cards has been ongoing since the release of batch 1, and is burning lots of goodwill and causing reputation damage for rabbit. Users want to be able to use their r1 wherever they go, where others will see their use cases and possibly also get excited to also buy an r1. Forgive my constructive directness (I’m Dutch), but i.m.h.o. providing this clarity should be a no-brainer and is deemed more important than some of the recent releases.

This issue is the primary reason why I stopped trying to find a working data SIM for my r1, and that is why I hardly use the r1 in the wild (unless I can access a public wifi).

I love constructive directness  It’s fine.

You have to remember - we’re a small team; and everyone has their own speciality… the release of a feature like “r-cade” doesn’t necessarily interrupt the work elsewhere in the product.

… and I should have been more clear - my superpower is learning enough about various topics to help push projects forward - so I plan to use it on this if needed  . The device team is looking into a few issues at the moment, including this one… but they don’t spend as much time in the forums as I do, and I don’t know enough about the problem space to speak eloquently about it :stuck_out_tongue:

I need to figure out a better way to separate my thoughts from “official updates” better :frowning: As a customer, I hate empty non-committal statements like “We appreciate your feedback and are doing our best to solve your issue”… so I try to add as much transparency as I can

TLDR;

  • Your feedback is valid
  • We are (and have been) working on it
  • (We really are, I just don’t have the details/knowledge to give any meaningful update)

Thanks, Matt. I fully understand. I’m glad that it’s on the radar.

@nzwaneveld The What SIM cards work with rabbit r1? support article contains information about what SIM cards are likely to work or not work. It also has a list of providers that community members have reported to work.
