Getting second r1 for experimental purposes

I am thinking of getting another r1 to strip down and make it thinner and changing the scroll wheel to the old fashion scroll knob you used to get on the side of the radios. ( if your old enough the remember them and the thin disk like knob the used to stick out of the side of the radios). And possibly moving the camera and making into to with some rewiring. So it doesn’t move. Plus bigger battery. So you have a thin slab with no visible wheel as it’s semi hidden on the side or maybe a touch strip on the side and camera would be top from and back. And the screen would be in the middle of the slab keeping screen same size. But then it may look to much like a smart phone or tablet just smaller. What do you think.

Maybe 3D print some parts and work out the forms first? I think there are some diagrams of the internals online and you could work around those, before getting a second one?

Speaking of experiment. Has anyone put two of them together and had them converse with each other?

Oh please don’t it would be as bad as two Furbies when we used to do it with them :joy::rofl:

I did that with the r1 and ChatGPT 4o a few times. It was pretty entertaining lol

The first time they started the conversation with an introduction, then it quickly turned into animal facts. The second time they continued to go back and forth saying “I’m an assistant. Let me know how I can help you.” lol :joy:

The third conversation was the most entertaining imo - I started it by telling the r1 I wanted to go on a choose-your-own adventure, then ChatGPT took over to make each decision based on the options r1 provided.

Honestly I think that’s a good idea. I do like the current scroll wheel but it is kind of finicky sometimes. A classic scroll knob would be nice however the size in comparison to the screen the the edge might be a little odd.

Maybe it could have a little indent that you could set your thumb on. That way you can make the knob a bit smaller, but still easy turn.

It’ll give you the option of turning the wheel like we already do with the current scroll wheel, or putting your thumb on the face of the “radio knob” (where the indent is) to turn the wheel faster rather than flicking

Something like these, but orange lol:

The wheel does need a bit of work. It would even be better if there was a recalibration option if it ever gets stuck like the infamous Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons and sensitivity options for the wheel so it feels a bit better. Even better is if the wheel had some grooves and haptic feedback like what the Apple Watch has. Just some ideas but I still think it’s a decently designed wheel that Teenage Engineering could come up with!

Haptic and grooves would actually make the scroll wheel way better.

I do enjoy the current scroll wheel. Love how it has this heaviness/weight to it and it feels premium.

But sometimes I can’t tell if I’m actually scrolling or if my thumb is just sliding over it unless the screen is on and I can see the visual feedback

Even if only haptic was added I feel like it would make the experience way better

Although there is kind of a haptic I would like more. And grooves in the heel would absolutely be great. Not beneficial per say but better for the user experience in my opinion. Otherwise that I think the current wheel is good but could use improvements.

Yeah I like that design. Either an indent or out dent? I mean like above surface level byt i don’t know the proper word for it. Like a little dot or something. I mean the possibilities for the r1 are endless so whatever we think of can be put unto production.

Haptic vibrations would be nice. And I think small raised ridges, or a couple of small raised dots would also make it easier knowing the wheel is turning

I agree with that. It’s not that difficult to tell when the wheel spins but ridges would feel more natural when navigating

I was thinking something like this it could be part hidden on one side. So you can rest your finger on it move it up down.
