Fix my own R1... can I?

Hi all,

My R1 has a strange rattling sound , probably some component got loose.
Is there a way/guide to open it and fix it myself?

Thx!

F.

If you still have a warranty, then opening the r1 will void the warranty. If there is no warranty, then here is how you could do it… but there is a risk that you need to think through. It’s an all-or-nothing situation.

How to open up the r1

If you are a bit tech savvy, you can open up the r1 and figure out what is causing the noise. The back of the r1 is glued in place. So to open it, you need to put a little bit of heat on it and then slowly pop it open. To close it, you can use super glue (gel) to glue it back on. Preferably use the gel form, because that takes a few minutes longer to harden than regular super glue. Only put small dots in the corners and the center, in case you ever needed to open it again. (I wouldn’t recommend using two component epoxy glue for this!)

A common cause of the rattling noise is two pieces that have broken off that hold the camera down. See photo’s.
In case of the camera, you will need to figure out how to fasten it so that the camera can still rotate freely. I personally recommend using a two component epoxy glue and applying just enough glue that the metal bracket is fastened to the remaining bit of plastic pins (see arrows on the photo). Try to glue back the metal ‘studs’, because these help to keep the scroll wheel in place when the back is put back in place. Don’t overdo it with the glue! Preferably apply glue in two stages, allowing for sufficient time in between to harden. If done properly, everything still works after you put it back together.

Do this at your own risk.
