Language Support > Arabic

I was recently introducing the r1 to some Saudi Arabian friends of mine and found that Arabic was not one of the languages supported yet. They’re very excited to get their hands on an r1, mentioning how being able to chat with an intelligent agent like it will improve their English. Nevertheless, having Arabic support will certainly make their user experience way nicer, being able to use natural language to communicate with the device.

I also would like Arabic for the same reason they look forward to English on the r1; to improve my Arabic! I use Spanish and Mandarin often on my r1, and it’s helped tremendously with navigating technology and the world in those languages.

What’s the process like for adding support for another language? Is there anything I may be able to do to help with the process? What hurdles might be present?

Unfortunately, this is something we can only influence vs solve… Our TTS + STT provider would both need support, and then Arabic speaking customers would STILL get a bad experience compared to everyone else, because foundational LLMs simply don’t perform very well with them right now :frowning:

I do expect that as foundational models improve, we will too

Thank you for the information! I’ll run more research on this. I’d love to help the AI community develop stronger Arabic compatibility!
