Hey Siriap,
When we first launched, traffic from “web agents” went from cloud servers to the destination website without connecting to your r1. In August, that changed - your internet traffic goes through your r1 now.
There were a few reasons to do this, but mainly the fact that websites won’t see you as trying to connect both from a datacenter in the US and your actual location anymore.
So, you’re right - teach mode and LAM playground are using more data than at launch.
Other contributing factors:
r1 now syncs magic photos back to the device (if you have local photo gallery enabled)
GenUI uses ~ 50% more data than normal responses; this is because of all the additional styling information that gets sent
I would try turning off photo sync and GenUI first to see how that adjusts things.
It might be worth creating a feature request post about “disable Web Agents on mobile data” as well… you would lose a lot of capability; but if your goal is “just the AI walkie talkie please”… that toggle would save your data.
Unfortunately, as we release new features, you will see data usage increase I would not recommend going with a $10/GB provider like you described.
