what is developer mode and how does it work?

TLDR;

  • It toggles the “Allow OEM Unlocking” option that you would find on a typical android device
  • This allows you to fastboot flash the device with another rom
  • The big list of “no, it doesn’t do that”:
    • No, it won’t help you run faster
    • No, it won’t help you jump higher
    • No, it won’t grant you ADB access
    • No, you won’t have access to cloud until you flash back
  • Yes, you can always flash back (firmware is available on the githubs)

Releasing this was the highlight of my week - I hope you folks enjoy it!

I’m confused. If you want an android device you can flash a rom on, there are lots of options to go for: why would you want to disable the Rabbit functionality on the R1 for that? Why not get a google pixel instead?

What am I missing, why is this something to get excited about?

Its simply extra freedom on a fun form factor, as well as the potential for more tinkering for those who like to mess with stuff.

Absolutely, you can use other android devices and flash away, but that’s not really the point for those who have been looking forward to this - to some, it ensures if anything ever happens to rabbit, you can find other ways to use them. Others, they might not think rabbitos is “there” yet, but love the form factor, so they flash something like android or linux until rabbit has more finished work or irons out some problems. Some just want to mess around because it’s fun.

At the end of the day, if you bought a rabbit to use rabbit, this won’t be of any use, but to some folks it just allows them to use the device how they want. It’s more about fun than practicality.

It’s not really an update meant for most people tbh, but it’s a big one for those who were looking forward to it.

Hey team! Great that this is possible! I have a question. i’ve purchased a second r1 specifically for unlocking it and flashing it with costum roms. It is not linked to my rabbit hole, it never was activated and flashed from the box. What would be the best thing to do? Flash it back to stock and then register it under a new account? Or just keep it like it is? Thanks!

// Matt Domko answer, not rabbit answer

Up to you - we’ll patch the bootloader in the future, and unlocking now will ensure that you can toggle back from stock once that patch lands. But, nothing says you can’t just follow the process then. If you are comfortable with your current process, and don’t plan to revert this one back to stock… I would just stick with what I have.

All this really does it cut out the mtkclient steps when flashing from stock to another rom.
